Top 10 North Vancouver Fitness Ideas

1. The Grouse Grind

The Grind still has to be one of the best North Vancouver Fitness ideas. The grind is challenging, not too long and one of the biggest benefits is that you get to ride down.

Riding down is a huge benefit because our knees really don’t do well coming down the mountain. If you can avoid the down trek, your body and knees will really thank you.

2. The Seawall

There are few things as invigorating as hitting the seawall for a walk, run or both. I always look to see if people are out there in the rain and they are! It’s still fun and highly beneficial to your health. Don’t worry about getting wet, worry about getting a great workout and relaxing once you’ve earned that couch!

North Vancouver has an amazing seawall that carries right into West Vancouver. If you’re looking for great scenery and an invigorating walk, run, bike or stroll, hit the seawall today.

3. Skiing & Snowshoeing

Both of these activities are a great workout and get you outside in our winters! During Covid, this is evermore important as we are still a bit trapped inside. Grouse has many snowshoeing trails. Start there if you’re interested.

4. Running with Leg Exercises

I asked an X-athlete what she was doing a little while ago because she was still in such great shape. She said she would go jogging and when she passed a field, she would do some lunges, backwards running, side stepping, butt kicks, high knees and squats. She’d created a perfect balance of cardio and resistance training.

It was keeping her in fantastic shape and it can do the same for you!

5. In Home Workouts

No matter where you are, you can do an in home workout. Buy a resistance band at Fitness Town or Fitness Depot and try a few exercises with it. It’s much cheaper and more versatile than an a bunch of dumbbells.

Not sure what to do with the band, give us a call. We can show you an awesome routine you can do with it in your backyard, rec room or living room!

6. Pickle Ball

Pickle ball is a mini version of tennis played on a badminton sized court. Think of it as the perfect low impact racquet sport. It’s fun and played with a slower speed ball and is fast becoming a popular activity for folks that don’t want the full intensity of tennis or squash.

It’s also interactive and engaging. Like many other racquet sports, it’s a great way to meet new people. This equipment is cheap and the game is easy to pick up. I highly recommend it.

7. Pick Up a Ball

We often forget how fun throwing or kicking a ball around can be. Whether you want to go shoot some hoops or pass a soccer ball around, it can be a great workout.

8. Swimming

For some reason, the winter makes us forget about swimming. It’s not hot outside or the weather is making us wet enough. I’m not sure what it is but whatever it is, you shouldn’t let it stop you!

Swimming really is one of the most balanced and reciprocal physical activities on the planet! As a life long swimmer and trainer of many athletes, active seniors and a mom who did synchro swimming, I highly recommend it!

9. Join a Sports Group

Pick your sport and pick your group. Indoor soccer or hockey are great options that have lots of leagues for everyone. Tai chi and Pilates are other group fitness ideas that might suit you.

Whatever you pick, understand that interaction with others is one of the most important activities we can do to improve our longevity. Join a group today!

10. Hire a personal Trainer

Hiring a trainer can coincide with all of the above activities. In many cases, people forget that we as trainers are facilitators of training you for sports and activities.

If you’re holding back from doing things because you’re worried about hurting yourself, not being strong enough or testing an old injury, we can get you back in the game. That’s a huge part of what we do.

Whatever activity you decide to choose, understand that the key is to get out there and do something regardless of your age or capacity (Always check with your doctor first).
